John P. Atkinson, M.D.
Chief, Division of Rheumatology

Professor of Medicine and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Samuel B. Grant

Professor of Medicine

Clinical Focus

Difficult to diagnosis and/or manage inflammatory disorders, including autoimmune conditions like SLE.

Research Interest

Over the past decade, my laboratory focuses on the identification and characterization of membrane glycoproteins that regulate complement activation and process immune complexes; recently, mutations in these proteins have been identified in several rare as well as common human diseases.

Chyi-Song Hsieh, M.D., Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Medicine

Clinical Focus

Research Interest

The goal of my laboratory is to understand how self-reactive T cells are eliminated or controlled, thereby preserving tolerance to self and preventing autoimmunity, with the belief that this knowledge may eventually be utilized therapeutically in human disease

Debbie Lenschow, M.D., Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Medicine

Clinical Focus

Treating patients with rheumatic disease and educating the next generation of rheumatologists.

Research Interest

The goal of my laboratory is aimed at elucidating the mechanism by which ISG15 exerts its antiviral activity by exploring the function of the innate immune system in the absence of ISG15; determining the fate of proteins conjugated to ISG15; and investigating the cytokine activity of ISG15.

Clinical adjunct faculty members play important roles in our training program. Though they are primarily in private practice in the St. Louis area, they are active as attending physicians in the outpatient clinics and on the inpatient consultation service. In addition, they regularly attend and participate in the weekly journal clubs and Rheumatology Grand Rounds. Their dedication to teaching provides a broad-based and thorough training in clinical rheumatology.
