Welcome to the WashU Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program! We train rheumatologists to deliver excellent care to all patients with rheumatic diseases and, in a supportive learning environment, foster trainees who will advance the field of rheumatology through clinical care, scientific inquiry, education, leadership, and advocacy. Become the rheumatologist and leader you aspire to be with the guidance of WashU’s clinical training, expert faculty, career development tracks, and inclusive culture.

You will graduate from WashU Rheumatology prepared to practice wherever your career goals take you, in academia or the community. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the nation by US News & World Report, and its broad catchment area will immerse you in the gamut of rheumatic diseases and patients from all walks of life. You will learn from clinical experts in general rheumatology, autoimmune eye disease, interstitial lung disease, musculoskeletal ultrasonography, myositis, rheumatology-oncology, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitis. We are committed to improving health outcomes among people with rheumatic diseases, and rheumatology social workers, nurses, and medical assistants will enhance your capacity to address patients’ social risk factors in clinical practice. In collaboration with St. Louis Children’s Hospital , we offer combined adult-pediatrics rheumatology training for fellows seeking dual board certification.
Since its inception in the 1960s, WashU Rheumatology has cultivated thought leaders who will eagerly share their expertise with you. The division boasts a strong legacy in basic science and clinical research as well as medical education. You will complete a scholarship project of your choosing during fellowship with the mentorship of WashU faculty. Who better to assist your career development than the experts in the field?
We offer four tracks that support a range of career trajectories: clinical, clinical research, laboratory research, and medical education. These tracks will teach you professional skills that position you to accomplish your goals. WashU Rheumatology graduates achieve their desired careers, with about 60% of fellows starting academic careers, 40% entering community-based practice, and a substantial number of fellows completing their RhMSUS musculoskeletal ultrasonography certification upon graduation.
WashU Rheumatology fosters an inclusive environment that values the wellness, collaboration, and contributions of its members. Wellbeing is integrated into training, and you will have access to WashU GME resources that enhance your experience. The city of St. Louis builds on WashU’s culture with offerings like the free St. Louis Zoo, competitive sports teams, a vibrant food scene, and exciting festivals. If you’ve never been to St. Louis, we hope you visit and discover why we are so fond of our city.
