The Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease-related Interstitial Lung Disease (SARD-ILD) Clinic is one of our division’s specialized clinics. Established in 2022 under the leadership of Dr. Aisha Shaikh, who serves as the clinic director guiding the clinic’s vision and efforts, the clinic focuses on the complexities of interstitial lung diseases (ILD) associated with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome, myositis, and vasculitis. Our team includes Dr. Deepali Sen, with expertise in ILD associated with immune inflammatory myopathies, and Dr. Sambhawana Bhandari, who joined our team in 2025 after completing a fellowship at Washington University.
Our SARD-ILD Clinic is distinct as it focuses on interstitial lung diseases associated with autoimmune disorders, along with the management of the underlying autoimmune diseases. Our team of experienced physicians is adept at diagnosing and treating these complex conditions, understanding the intricate interplay between systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases and interstitial lung disease.
We strive to provide excellent patient care through a multidisciplinary approach, collaborating closely with pulmonologists- both within the university and the community, the radiologists, and the pathologists. Our regular multidisciplinary case conferences facilitate accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans, leveraging our collective expertise.
Our treatment strategies are tailored to each patient’s unique needs, typically encompassing a combination of medications to manage both the underlying systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases and the associated interstitial lung disease. The SARD-ILD Clinic remains dedicated to advancing patient care through innovative treatments and collaborative expertise with the goal of slowing disease progression and enhancing the overall quality of life for those affected by these complex conditions.
